The US ambassador to Australia says Washington is ready to provide "hundreds of millions" of dollars to Solomon Islands but is waiting for "permission" from the nation's government. Caroline Kennedy is in the region to mark the 80th anniversary of her father - former president John F. Kennedy - having helped save the crew of his torpedo boat after it was destroyed by a Japanese warship during the Second World War.
