Burlington Mayor Miro Weinberger and police chief Jon Murad provided an update on Monday, after three college students of Palestinian descent in Burlington, Vt. were shot and injured over the weekend. The officials said that the three men, all age 20, were walking home during Thanksgiving break when they were confronted by a man with a handgun.

Murad told reporters that suspect Jason J. Eaton, 48, had moved to Burlington over the summer and had purchased the gun legally. According to a police affidavit, federal agents found the gun in Eaton’s apartment on Sunday.

"Although we do not yet have evidence to support a hate crime enhancement, I do want to be clear that there is no question that this was a hateful act," said Sarah Fair George, state's attorney for Chittenden County.

After the attack, two victims were in stable condition while the third suffered “much more serious injuries,” according to Murad.
