Photos and film from the 1950s to the early ‘90s are at risk of disappearing because of “vinegar syndrome.”

The destructive and contagious chemical decay causes film to shrink and crack until the image is lost — it can even be harmful to people when breathed in.

That’s because most film from this time period was cellulose acetate-based.

Now, libraries and archives are in a race against time to preserve these records.
