As emergency crews battle blazes in western Canada, doctors manage the fallout in emergency rooms. The result is that more people need medical attention because of gases and particulate matter being released into the air.

It's a health consideration for people right across the country according to Angela Yao, a senior scientist at the B.C. Centre for Disease Control. “It can travel miles and miles away from the actual fire and when it reaches us it can get really deep into our lungs,” Yao says.

Doctors say keeping an eye on the air quality index during fire season is important.
