The governor of Maine and Lewiston police confirmed the death of mass shooting suspect Robert R. Card on Friday during a press conference, following an extensive, statewide two-day manhunt. Card was suspected of killing 18 people at a bar and bowling alley in Lewiston earlier this week.

Card's body was found at approximately 7:45 p.m. by a river in Lisbon Falls, Maine on Friday evening. He died of an "apparent, self-inflicted gunshot," according to Maine public safety commissioner Mike Sauschuck.

"[This] discovery is entirely thanks to the hundreds of local, county, state and federal law enforcement members from all over and people from other states as well, people who searched tirelessly to arrive at this moment," said Maine Gov. Janet Mills.

Following the horrific Wednesday shootings, officials ordered tens of thousands of area residents to shelter in place for their safety and indicated that the manhunt could continue for at least several days more.

"He is deceased and no longer a threat to our community or any other community," Lewiston Police Chief David St. Pierre said.

The number of people killed in Wednesday's attacks is close to the annual number of homicides that normally occur in Maine, which has fluctuated between 16 and 29 since 2012, according to Maine State Police.
