A U.S. Army reservist accused of killing 18 people during a shooting at a bowling alley and bar in Lewiston, Maine, was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The suspect’s body was located in a recycling plant trailer after a 48-hour manhunt, Maine Public Safety Commissioner Mike Sauschuck said at a Saturday briefing.

Officials said the body of Robert R. Card, 40, was discovered on Friday night at a recycling plant in Lisbon Falls where he worked at one point, less than a mile from where police found his abandoned getaway vehicle shortly after his shooting spree on Wednesday night.

A Maine State Police tactical team found Card's body in an unlocked trailer in an overflow parking lot of the recycling plant, according to Sauschuck. He added that officers had cleared the plant twice in the course of their search, as they believed Card had some "employment relation" to the business, but they had missed an extra parking lot.

Officials have not confirmed a motive for the gun violence, but Sauschuck said that there was "a mental health component" to the tragedy. Sauschuck also said police found a note left at Card's house — which he didn’t describe as an “explicit suicide note” – which was addressed to a loved one with his phone passcode and bank account information.
