Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston, and other officials, provided a Saturday update on the firefighting efforts in the province, saying a wildfire burning northwest of Halifax is now 85 per cent contained thanks to much-needed rain.

Even as the rain has largely helped contain the blaze, Houston said the no-burn rule is still in effect.

"It is raining right now. That doesn't mean you can burn. The grounds are still very dry. The burn bans remain in effect. So I'll repeat that for good measure. Do not burn," he said.

In addition, schools will remain closed on Monday and Tuesday.

Dave Steeves, a technician of forest resources with the Department of Natural Resources and Renewables, said on Saturday that the fire hasn't grown and is still about 950 hectares in size.

As of Saturday, there have been 210 wildfires this season in the province, totalling 26,680 hectares.
