The perfect preparation for racing…

1. SLEEP ????
Peak performance at an important meet starts weeks in advance. At the very least you should be getting enough sleep in the lead up to your big meet. It’ll promote optimum recovery. Ideally, you already practise this for your training.

2. HYDRATION ????
Only becoming hydrated on the day of your competition is not ideal. Although replacing the fluids you lose through sweat in the water should be something you always focus on, for a big meet, I use to get to the level of hydration required for race day a few days in advance.

3. FUEL YOUR BODY ⛽️
Slow energy releasing foods! Bananas and pasta were always my go-to. Aim to get the balance right between eating too much too close to a race, and too little which will result in less energy when it matters.

4. PACK YOUR BAG THE DAY BEFORE RACE DAY ????
By being one step ahead and packing your race day necessities at least the night before (if possible), that’s a couple of less things to worry about on the day of competition. Calmness to focus on the important things.

5. STRETCHING ????????‍♀️
Keeping my body warm and supple if one of my absolute priorities before competing. By always allowing your body to be at optimum performance prior to racing, you’ll always give yourself a great chance at performing to the best of your ability!

6. KNOW YOUR RACE PLAN ????
Going into a competition, you should ideally know your plan for your event(s). This is important for visualisation and learning from your race.

7. VISUALISATION ????
Spend time before your race to run through your race in your mind. Keep it positive and do not over-stress too many factors.

8. TIMING ⏱️
If possible, know what time your race is and work backwards from there to know when you should be doing things like pre-pool, travelling to the pool, when to eat breakfast etc.
