Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stood firm on his earlier comments that he learned about China's alleged plot to intimidate Conservative MP Michael Chong from a report by the Globe and Mail on Monday, saying the information had not reached him, his office or the public safety minister at the time. He added he shared the "best information" he had at the time on Wednesday with Chong and Canadians.

The latest comments by Trudeau come a day after Chong contradicted the prime minister's earlier remarks, saying CSIS told the Privy Council Office in 2021 about the alleged intimidation plot. Chong's revelation in the House of Commons on Thursday suggests the prime minister's top security official was told two years ago that Chong had been targeted by the Beijing regime.

Trudeau went on to say he had told CSIS to share more intelligence in response to the report. He said CSIS at the time had "proceeded to go through their processes in the way that they felt was the right thing to do." He said it was "obvious" the processes need to change and moving forward, any threat "whether it's serious or credible or not" to an MP or their family needs to be elevated "to higher levels than it was."
